About Heather Chou Photography

Heather Chou Sontag has been a photographer for the last 13 years.  She received her BA in photography and cultural studies in 1998 after traveling for much of her undergraduate education.  During her travels she focused on photography projects in Europe, Madagascar, and Mexico.  From these travels she self published two limited edition, hand made, photography books.

Heather presently works almost exclusively with alternative processes, in and out of the darkroom.  One of her current bodies of work uses liquid emulsion on arches printing paper.  The brush strokes created by painting on the emulsion give the photographs an antique and far off appearance.

She also works extensively with Polaroid manipulations, either dye or emulsion transfers.  Many of the 3x4 transfers are from the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco where Heather taught photography to youth.

Her newest transfer project comes from photographs taken in New Orleans in the spring of 2005.  She went to the city to capture the variety of architecture and discovered a secret world of details, unique to New Orleans.  These transfers are printed using 8x10 Polaroid film/paper.

She has shown her work locally, and in Southern California.  She presently lives in the East Bay of the San Francisco area.
